Subject: Updating the EU-Mexico Global Agreement
The EU-Mexico Global Agreement is at an advanced stage. A lot of effort has been made, and both sides are keen to sign the updated agreement and consolidate our relations.
As Chair of the European Parliament’s EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee, I believe it is vitally important to back the agreement in order to speed up the procedures that will allow the European Parliament to ratify it before the end of the current parliamentary term.
Could the Commission state what action it is taking with a view to ensuring the agreement can be formalised before the end of the current parliamentary term?
Answer given by Vice-President Mogherini on behalf of the European Commission (14 August 2018)
The negotiations on the Modernisation of the EU-Mexico Global Agreement are in the final stages.
An overall agreement was reached on the political and cooperation part in November 2017. The focus now is to agree a few remaining institutional and final provisions.
An agreement in principle on the trade and investment parts was reached on 21 April 2018, while technical work is now taking place in order to finalise all relevant details.
In parallel to this work, the legal revision of the agreed texts has begun. Once this is completed, the texts will be translated into the official languages of the European Union, so as to prepare the Commission’s proposal to the Council and the European Parliament for the signature and conclusion of the Agreement.
Every effort is made to finalise the remaining issues as quickly as possible and to speed up internal procedures.
